Phi Phi Islands
No time for a break in the action. Our first full day was Wednesday, March 5 and we were off to the Phi Phi Islands. At the ferry terminal parking lot, Will stepped out of the car, and there it was right in front of him!
Pop pop promises you no tsunami Will! What looks like our dime is a one Thai baht coin (฿ THB).
On the Chao Koh Group ferry for the two-hour trip from Rassada Pier on the main island to Ton Sai Pier on the Phi Phi Islands (pronounced pee pee).
Leaving Rassada Harbor
Crossing the Andaman Sea.
Inside Ton Sai Bay on Ko Phi Phi Don, the largest of the islands in the Phi Phi archipelago.
Nearing the pier. Our hotel, the Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort, is at the bottom of the cliff.
Very few dogs but lots of cats. The smart ones—like this guy lounging on the check-in counter at our hotel—find a cool place where they get lots of love.
More anti-durian sentiment on the refrigerator in our hotel room.. 😄
The view from our hotel room at Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort—Wow!
The sign on our slider door. Do they mean this literally or figuratively? (I love the phrase please save note. In the UK they liked to write “PN” for polite notice.)
Oh, OK then. They mean it quite literally!
That night, Amanda and I were sound asleep in our room at 2 a.m. when we were startled awake by one of these little bandits trying to open the slider. Scared us to death…but can you imagine if our slider had been unlocked and the monkey had come in the room with us in the dark?! 😱 Makes me think of the Ten Little Monkeys book we used to read to the kids each night.
The beach in front of our hotel.
Coconut water twins!
At the nearby Shine Ta Lay café.
Hotel pool right outside our slider…and the view!
That evening, John, Sabrina, Karina, and I made the hike up to Viewpoints 1 and 2.
A lot of steps.
Father and daughter at Viewpoint 1. Behind us you can see that most of the village sits on an isthmus (tombolo), a sand bar linking two smaller islands.
Viewpoint 2
Sitting on the platform at Viewpoint 2.
Belles fleurs!
The sun setting 15 hours ahead of everyone back home. 🌞
On the north side of the tombolo on Loh Dalum Beach things get a little wild at night.
John, Karina, and Sabrina
John does fire jumprope. Mic drop! Goodnight Phi Phi!
Good morning Phi Phi Islands.
What a way to wake up!
John did a great job haggling for a half-day ride on a classic Southeast Asia long-tail boat for a tour around nearby Ko Phi Phi Lay (island).
Now you just let your mama put some sunscreen on your face.
Departing from Ton Sai Bay, our hotel in the background.
Halfway to Ko Phi Phi Lay. Hey, that rhymes!
Nearly there.
Rocks shaped by the sea.
The whole group in Maya Bay, made famous by The Beach (2000) staring Leonardo DiCaprio (not to be confused with his 2010 movie Shutter Island).
Inside Pi Leh Bay
Getting ready for snorkeling.
Group snorkeling near the east side of Viking Cave.
Almost back to the main island.
One final dip in the pool before check-out.
Pad Thai for lunch in Thailand
Walking back toward the pier after breakfast and look what Will found. (No, unfortunately not her!)
Hmm…what to do when you have an hour to kill before the ferry departs?
Foot massages, of course!
Walking onto the ferry and what does Will spot at his feet—a third dime?
On the ferry back to Phuket Island. Thank you Phi Phi Islands for so many great memories!
