Tenbury Wells

Beauty without purpose is beauty without virtue. But all beautiful things, inherently, have this function—to excite the viewers toward sublime thought. Glory to the world, that good teacher.
— Mary Oliver, Evidence

If you’ve ever imagined living away from the hustle and bustle of the city, on a piece of land where neighbors and pedestrians cannot look directly into your house, a place with character and charm, a place of peace and tranquility—then you’ve imagined the Coach House in the small village of Tenbury Wells, southwest of Birmingham. We’re here Apr 13-15.

This is a dream property!

Entrance to our studio, decked out with a flying duck weather vain.

The Coach House and the owner’s two homes beyond.

The old coach house doors under our studio apartment, along with our zippy hybrid Hyundai Ionic.

Walking the creekside trail near the house.

Young siblings basking in the sun.

Pond complete with duck house in the back garden.

Tree swing

The owner lives in the house on the right, which is a genuine 16th century Tudor manor house—amazing! We don’t know any background on the brick house built beside it. They have their own ha-ha wall, which is pretty cool.

The home’s original drawing well.

How fairytaleland is this garden cottage, complete with small couch and wood-burning fireplace?

Or how about this summer room with outdoor oven?

Mr Cool 😎

We didn’t ask the owner to confirm, but Pearl French guinea fowl such as this gal here are often purchased and allowed to roam free on property because they do a great job of pest control—including keeping tick, mouse, small rat, and snake populations under control. They are also known to amuse themselves for hours staring at their own reflections. 🪞

Do you guess I have some intricate purpose? Well I have…for the April rain has, and the mica on the side of a rock has.

The Coach House was certainly our most idyllic stay thus far on our trip, and a wonderful respite.
