For his part, the Count had opted for the life of the purposefully unrushed. Not only was he disinclined to race toward some appointed hour—disdaining even to wear a watch—he took the greatest satisfaction when assuring a friend that a worldly matter could wait in favor of a leisurely lunch or stroll along the embankment. After all, did not wine improve with age? Was it not the passage of years that gave a piece of furniture its delightful patina? When all was said and done, the endeavors that most modern men saw as urgent (such as appointments with bankers and the catching of trains), probably could have waited, while those they deemed frivolous (such as cups of tea and friendly chats) had deserved their immediate attention.

While Thanksgiving may be uniquely American, apparently Black Friday is widely celebrated.

Hey Will, look what we found!

Loft was Amanda's favorite store, until today (Nov 23)…

Everything in this store was simply amazing, from candles, to clothing, to bedding—even the decorations were beautiful.

Outside the store, it’s the craziest thing, you are walking down the street and you turn a corner and—BAM!—there is this massive castle sitting on top of a massive hill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKLGEF45eJ8

(Amanda here, Hi!) After shopping, we went to the Scottish National Gallery where I was very pleasantly surprised to find a work from my favorite Renaissance artist, Sandro Botticelli. The Virgin Adorning the Sleeping Christ Child did not disappoint, with Botticelli’s characteristic sweet and romantic style that I love so much!

Notice the pretty pink and blue flowers, along with the sweet little (what I think are) strawberries in the bottom right hand corner. Sleeping baby Jesus is so sweet and Mary’s face and hair so reminiscent of his other works. I also loved all of the pretty gold detail at the bottom of her cloak, throughout her dress, and in her and baby Jesus’s halos, they glimmered in real life. So beautiful and in such contrast to so many other artists of the time who often depicted Jesus more like a shrunken man than a sweet baby.

A few parting shots of our evening.

The Castle and buildings on the Royal Mile in repose with the setting sun.

As part of the Christmas Market, the ferris wheel and huts are nearly ready for Friday’s big opening. The Scottish Monument and the iconic clock at the Balmoral hotel greet the crisp evening.

The Edinburgh City Chambers lit for Christmas.

We’re not ashamed to report that we had dinner at Dishoom again, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere “mirrors the faded elegance of old Irani cafés and the food of old Bombay.” We have been spoiled; it will be hard to find other Indian food this good!
