Sowing the Seeds of Love

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
— John Muir, Dunbar, Scotland

Today (Dec 9) was relatively uneventful, but the City never ceases to impress us, as you’ll see. We took a short bus ride to have breakfast at Seeds For The Soul, on the south edge of town.

What a great find. My Vegan Benny was so good I nearly ordered a second (that’s OK; we’ll go back again!).

Amanda’s pancakes were good, but nothing to write home about (quite literally in this case). On the other hand, Amanda said her peanut butter cup hot chocolate was the best she has ever had!

The Meadows

After breakfast we took a leisurely stroll through Bruntsfield Links, a former woodland cleared in 1508 to build timber-fronted houses in the Old Town. A plaque states that later Bruntsfield Links were one of the earliest known locations where golf was played in Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle stands in the back center and the Salisbury Crags near Arthur’s Seat loom at the right.

Just stunning! Look how long our shadow is even approaching midday. The sun only makes its brief appearance very low on the horizon throughout the day.

We then crossed the road and entered another massive public park called The Meadows (John Rebus lives nearby).

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, also known as the Great Exhibition or the Crystal Palace Exhibition, was an international exhibition which took place in Hyde Park, London, from May to October in 1851. The event was organized by Prince Albert.

In 1886, his grandson erected a Grand Hall in The Meadows. Although the Grand Hall was eventually removed, the sundial pillar from the front remains.

The Meadows originally contained a manmade loch, known as the “burgh loch” or, later, the “South Loch.” (The “Nor’ Loch” is now unrecognizable as Princes Street Gardens.) Until Edinburgh’s first piped water supply from Comiston arrived in 1621, this loch provided much of Edinburgh’s drinking water.

At the other end of the park is a really cool permanent art exhibition: Born Free Forever (it has a cool backstory if you follow the link).

Hope You Are All Having A Happy Christmas Season!
