Final Two Days

Before the trip, the girls had decided to spend Tuesday with just the two of them together. Sabrina arranged for Karina and her to attend a ring-making class, where they made matching rings. Afterward, Sabrina’s engraved a “K” inside her ring and Karina engraved a “S.”

The two then spent the remainder of the day hanging out at the Maya Beach Club, talking for hours and hours…so much to catch up on.

They hung around long enough that the bar staff had custom drinks brought to them. That night, the eight of us met back at our rental house, had dinner, and swam in the pool.

Wednesday, March 12, was our final day together. Our flight from Phuket to Singapore did not depart until 8:10 p.m., so we packed our bags, loaded up the van, checked out of our rental, and headed down to the Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort where Melissa and Derek stayed.

Melissa, Derek, Karina, and I snorkeled in Kamala Bay, and then all eight of us spent hours at the pool.

After relaxing in the pool, we drove to near by Kamala Beach where we got mango coconut smoothies and then visited the 2004 Tsunami Memorial—the area of Kamala Beach was one area particularly devastated by the gigantic wall of water.

There was just enough time to get one final foot massage at our favorite place in Kamala Beach: Anara Massage.

It was so bittersweet saying goodbye to Sabrina and John at Phuket Airport. On the one hand, it had been a dream for over twenty years to meet Sabrina, and we were deeply grateful to have spent ten amazing days getting to know one another better.

On the other hand, it was ever so painful to leave Sabrina and John behind in Thailand. Although they had already been family in so many ways, we were about to reinstate a 9,000-mile separation. What a tremendous privilege it was to meet and be together!

I was 7 years old when I found out I had a sister.

True, she lives somewhere far, far away, across the Pacific Ocean, in America. When I was a child, it seemed surreal—like from another life that would never cross mine.

Now I'm 25 and Karina is 22, and our lives finally met. 🤍

Karina was adopted when she was just 7 months old, and I don't remember her at all. So, to think of it, it's not even a meeting, but the real acquaintance. A little weird, very exciting, but really special.

We spent 10 awesome days together—in Phuket and beyond. Now I know for sure that I have a sister. She loves coconut water, wants to take in all the animals in the world, and we seem to be equally clumsy.

Karina and her family came. Now they are my family too. A bit unreal, but the warmest feeling.

We spent our childhood differently, but now we have common memories. And even if they start not with Easter cakes in the sandbox, but with travels, laughter, and random phrases in "Rusinglish", it's still the coolest start. 💚 🌴
